Continuous identity assurance can help an organisation maintain greater confidence that the authorised user remains the person interacting with the application.

It cannot establish that:

  • The transaction or request is commercially sound
  • The device is free from malware
  • The user has not been deceived or pressured
  • The payment destination is trustworthy
  • Every other fraud signal is normal

These boundaries matter because a legitimate user can still perform an unusual action or act under manipulation. Fraud prevention therefore requires identity information to be assessed alongside device, behavioural, transaction and customer evidence.

How organisations can evaluate where it fits

Security, fraud, product and operations teams can begin by identifying actions that move value, change access, expose sensitive information or create difficult-to-reverse outcomes.

For each action, they should consider:

  • Which identity and authentication controls already apply
  • What additional identity context would contribute
  • How the action is assessed by device and transaction controls
  • What response is appropriate if identity confidence changes
  • How customer support, privacy and exception handling will work
  • Which evidence should be retained for review

This creates a clearer basis for using stronger assurance where it adds value without applying the same control to every interaction.
